Wednesday, October 23, 2024 (Ann Arbor, MI) — Sterling Elliott, winner of the 2024 Sphinx Organization Medal of Excellence and 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant, will make his debut with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (A2SO) on November 9, 2024. Elliott will partner with A2SO Music Director Earl Lee and the orchestra to perform Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto No. 1, perhaps the most famous of its kind ever composed and considered “supreme” by Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Harold Schonberg.

An acclaimed voice in the classical music industry, Elliott emerged from a musical family, appearing on the NPR-distributed From the Top program when just 14 years old. Since then he has appeared with a number of major orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and will make further debuts across the 24-25 season in addition to appearing at Carnegie Hall.

Sterling has a long history with the Detroit-based Sphinx Organization, a leading Detroit-based non-profit dedicated to the development of young Black and Latino classical musicians. Winner of the Junior and Senior Divisions of the Annual Sphinx Competition, Sterling received the Sphinx Medal of Excellence in 2024, the highest honor bestowed by the organization.

Music Director Earl Lee returns to the podium at the Michigan Theater as the orchestra performs its third concert of the 24-25 season. In addition to the Dvořák, the program includes Hungarian composer György Kurtág’s ominous and austere 1989 work Ligatura – Message To Frances-Marie, as well as Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, the penultimate work of the great German composer’s symphonic output.
